Our story

Designing was a matter of creativity for her from a young age. After school she could always be found in her parents' studio/boutique in Amsterdam, where she started sewing fabrics behind a large industrial machine. At first she designed clothes for her dolls and soon she also started designing clothes for herself. Over the years she also started helping her parents in their business. In the meantime she could operate all the machines in the workshop independently. Quite an experience for a little girl.

summer of 2012 was the year the struggle began to find swimwear that would fit her fashionable lifestyle. That was the year she started wearing a hijaab. Back then, you didn’t really have much choice. Burkinis looked like baggy tracksuits and rain suits. They looked funny, usually had neon colors or prints, didn’t dry out quickly, and weren’t fashionable at all, there were no other options at the time. Everything she was looking for in a modest swimsuit, she didn’t find in other designs.

Vaem Swim was created

After a long search, she decided to create her own design that fit her needs: a comfortable burkini that reflected her beliefs, style and philosophy. She never intended to launch a new burkini that no one knew about.

Inspired by her own desires and needs for a fashionable swimsuit that would perfectly fit her lifestyle and radiate a sense of quality, she designed her own black burkini with pink fringes. Now she was ready to go on vacation with it. With her big flap hat and burkini she walked confidently to the beach in 2012. All eyes were on her, it was strange, how could a lady with a hijaab wear a hat? She was wearing a swimsuit that had never been seen before, everyone looked with wide eyes at this stylish lady who elegantly made her lifestyle accessible on the beach, and after a while the bystanders came up to her and surrounded her with the question where she got that from? It was then that she realized she wasn't the only one in need of a completely new burkini in this world. After orders from her family, friends and neighbors... it quickly grew into a successful business through word of mouth.

The experience 

Break everything, of what the world would say... It is strange because a woman with a hijaab wears something, performs something, practices something or because she does something. 
For example, just like in this story because she had a floppy hat on, people looked at her very strangely, there was even someone in the family who made a comment that she should take off the hat. But for her it doesn't make sense why people looked at her so strangely. Wasn't the sun shining in her eyes??? Didn't she need one, while someone without a hijaab did need the same hat?

By listening to her inner voice, she has always been able to take care of herself, her feelings and actions and determine what she wants in life. She knows very well that there are countless girls in the world, just like her, who break a taboo in their own environment every day. These are militant women. Unfortunately, we still try to stand up for ourselves, because some things are not self-evident.

It’s beautiful to see how more modest brands have emerged that are inspired by strong women who openly stand up for it. This is sisterhood, we are grateful because we approve, stand up for and fully support the strong women in the same community. Vaem & Soi is very grateful to its loyal customers and followers on social media, who have given Vaem & Soi the opportunity to grow by supporting our brand.

The swimwear line is made of a mix of ultra-high-quality lycra fabric, which dries quickly, offers protection against UV radiation and still remains light. Our swimwear fabrics are made of a material that absorbs minimal water; when you get out of the water, the fabric immediately releases the water. In addition, the fabrics for our clothing are selected in such a way that attention is paid to quality but also to how the model fits the fabric and of course whether the fabric lasts a long time. 

Vaem & Soi tests and refines time and again to ensure that it meets the needs of the woman who wants to emphasize her elegance and wear her item for a long time. It is very important that the models that are designed, whether it concerns the swimwear or the clothing line, are durable and have a timeless model. So that the customers can enjoy the items for a long time, both in terms of taste and time.
